Education

Four DMD students wearing their white coats at the White Coat ceremony turning in their chairs and smiling for the camera.

“It was important to me that I attend a school that focuses heavily on the service aspects of dentistry. HSDM focuses on serving not only its national and international communities, but also its local populations.”

— Sabrina Del Valle, DMD27

Inspiring the Next Generation

This year’s DMD graduates embodied the School’s mission to serve as leaders in their profession and advocates for their patients and community. The Class of 2023 is already making their mark in the field by engineering new dental solutions, teaching the next generation of dentists, making dentistry accessible through storytelling, and more. Likewise, this year’s incoming predoctoral students bring a broad range of diverse experiences to HSDM and are immersing themselves in the first-year curriculum that emphasizes the connection between dentistry and medicine.

Ingrained in HSDM students is a passion for making a positive impact on the surrounding community. The Action for Children and Teens in Oral Health Need (ACTION) clinic, led by DMD students, was named a recipient of the “Access to Care Grants” from the Mass Dental Society. The clinic provides care to vulnerable pediatric patients in Cambridge and the Greater Boston area.

Through experiences like ACTION, and externships in community health centers, students get a holistic view of the socioeconomic factors influencing their patient’s oral health and access to care.

New courses and programs launched this year also address oral healthcare access and future workforce capacity. An advanced graduate education program is bridging the dental workforce gap in New Hampshire by expanding the pipeline of dental professionals in rural areas and creating opportunities for dentists to become more proficient in providing quality health care focused on population health and social determinants of health. Additionally, through a new federally-funded grant program, predoctoral dental students will receive further training in providing care to aging patients. The program ensures there is a skilled workforce ready to meet Americans’ aging oral health needs.

Research

“H-CREDENT is an exciting partnership that will leverage our collective expertise and commitment to fostering a culture of scientific inquiry, encouraging scientific partnerships between students and research faculty, and stimulating clinical research pursuits across HSDM and collaborating sites.”

— Dean William Giannobile

Fueling Discovery

HSDM’s research pursuits in basic science, clinical research, and population health studies were fueled by nearly $7 million in sponsored grant and contract expenditures in FY23. For basic science research, this vital support allowed researchers to explore the cellular and molecular underpinnings of rare bone diseases, skeletal homeostasis and pathogenesis with several new studies underway in the Yang Lab, Rosen Lab, Baron-Gori Lab, and Kota Lab supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Additionally, HSDM led important federally-funded studies examining population health, oral health disparities, and oral health workforce capacity. Dr. Sung Choi’s study on the impact of expanding the dental workforce to reduce the burden of dental caries among children in underserved areas led to a paper published in JAMA Health Forum.

With funding from an NIH R01 award, Dr. Hawazin Elani is assessing the impact of Medicaid on disparities in dental care utilization. Findings from this work and other ongoing studies may help inform federal and state policies to reduce disparities in oral health.

Looking ahead, HSDM continues to focus on widening its research capabilities and attracting up-and-coming scientists. Exciting new collaborations are on the horizon with a recently announced grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) that will support a clinical practice-based research network to train future clinician-scientists. The collaborative initiative H-CREDENT, led by HSDM, will bring together a consortium of community health centers and academic partners. And another NIDCR grant was awarded to a multidisciplinary team of researchers from HSDM and MGH to study temporomandibular disorders.

Local & Global Impact

Students gathered around an instructor outside in the field in Costa Rica.

“When you’re learning about other healthcare systems it’s hard to get a sense of what it is like for the average person because you’re learning from a book or a website. This was an opportunity to go into the field and learn firsthand about how things work.”

— Aisha Oshilaja, DMD24

Understanding Oral Health Needs

Community-focused care, as well as global programs, enriched and expanded HSDM’s understanding and treatment of oral health needs in FY23.  Locally, HSDM’s clinical practices in Boston and Cambridge treated an ever-expanding number of patients with more than 56,500 active patients in the greater Boston who receive their care at Harvard Dental Center practices.

Outreach events offering complimentary dental care, such as Give Kids a Smile and Give Veterans a Smile, grew as well and have been successful at expanding access to vulnerable populations, and connecting patients to longer-term oral health care and resources. This success was recognized when the dental students responsible for organizing Give Veterans a Smile received the 2023 Dean’s Community Service Award from Harvard Medical School for their efforts.

Globally, HSDM students and faculty gained perspectives in global health delivery from enriching experiences in Costa Rica and Rwanda. In Costa Rica, students were immersed in a week-long field class to observe how social, political, cultural, behavioral, and economic forces influence health access, health outcomes, and health systems. In Rwanda, longstanding partnerships were rekindled when HSDM faculty were invited to the University of Global Health Equity to train future Rwandan physicians in key oral health concepts.

Integrating health systems and exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in dentistry were the topics of two separate symposiums hosted by HSDM that brought together academics and health leaders from around the world. The well-attended events were highlighted in the Harvard Gazette and also led to a key paper in the Annals of Global Health.

“HSDM taught me at an early stage how important medical-dental collaboration is. It has meant so much to me to give and receive support from each other as we grow both professionally and in our personal lives.”

— Anupama Tate, DMD98

Cultivating Community

It was another year of strong alumni engagement, impact, and support. Over 800 alumni and friends attended HSDM events in FY23 including specialty receptions held both locally and nationally, as well as international gatherings. Over the summer, alumni returned to their alma mater and reunited with one another during Alumni Day. Matthew Plummer, Jr., DMD73, MPH74, and Anupama Tate, DMD98, received the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Awards for their significant contributions to the field of dentistry that honor the mission of the School.

The Harvard Dental Alumni Association (HDAA), led by president Miguel Roque, DMD16, MMSc19, continued to gain momentum with the launch of a new mentorship platform that creates more opportunities for students to learn from and connect with alumni.

As alumni reconnected with each other and with students through mentorship, they also gave back to HSDM through their service and generosity. Meaningful gifts that came to fruition in FY23, allowed HSDM to expand scholarship support to students in need of financial assistance. The late Michael Lawrence Barnett’s, PD73, legacy will continue to influence the next generation of periodontists through a generous estate gift of $1.1 million to the Periodontology program.

HSDM alumni make an ongoing impact in their roles as leaders in the profession—like alumna Jacqueline Burgette, DMD08, who was honored this past year as the first dentist to be selected as a White House Fellow. Drs. Plummer, Tate, Burgette, and so many others are making a difference in their communities and the profession.

Advancing Priorities

After a successful launch of HSDM’s strategic plan, the work on key priorities was well underway in FY23. Building on the strategic priority to invest in talented faculty and retain and develop faculty leaders, the School appointed its first full-time associate dean for Faculty Affairs. Dr. Brittany Seymour a respected faculty member in Oral Health, Policy, and Epidemiology for 12 years, was selected for the role and now oversees faculty recruitment and mentoring.

HSDM’s leadership team continued to expand with the promotion of Dr. Catherine Hayes, an alumna with an extensive background in public health research, policy, and teaching, to the role of Chair of the Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology. She also serves as Program Director of Dental Public Health. Additionally, Dr. Zachary Peacock, an alumnus of HSDM and a recognized leader and mentor in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) was appointed Chair of OMFS at HSDM and Massachusetts General Hospital’s (MGH) Chief of OMFS. In his new role, he leads all aspects of the clinical practice and OMFS advanced graduate educational programs at MGH and HSDM.

HSDM faculty and staff leaders were recognized with awards and recognition as role models in the field. Associate Dean for Dental Education Dr. Sang Park received one of the highest honors from the American Dental Education Association—the Centennial Presidential Award. Dr. Vicki Rosen, professor and chair of the Department of Developmental Biology, was selected as a recipient of the 2023 Barbara J. McNeil Faculty Award for Exceptional Service from Harvard Medical School (HMS), and Carrie Sylven, director of Student Affairs, was chosen as a recipient of the 2023 Daniel D. Federman Staff Award for Exceptional Service.

The School’s Bridge to Dental School program was honored by HMS with a 2023 Culture of Excellence in Mentoring Award underscoring the priority to advance pathway programs that encourage greater diversity and inclusion in the profession. In FY23, 203 undergraduate students participated in the program that provides underrepresented students with access to dental school application prep materials and one-on-one mentorship from current HSDM students.
